Exercise 3: Painting with pastels (inc.OCA Hangout feedback)

KIZZY

I felt somewhat dubious about this exercise, after all I’ve spent the last several years concentrating on ‘painting with pastels’ so to go back into this subject after only 2 exercises from Painting 1 was somewhat distracting I felt.

It did however feel familiar to me and after such a steep learning curve in the previous exercises therefore quite reassuring. Having said that a quick study of 20mins or so was all I could muster!

UPDATE: OCA Student Hangout Critique

I joined some other OCA students today for a Google Hangout, not something I’d ever heard of before, but basically a joint Skype call with up to 10 people, all with webcams & headsets. The night before, we emailed each other with a piece of our work and then at the scheduled time the next day, we joined the Hangout and gave our critique of each other’s work.

This is a fascinating process! As one would expect, we all had varying opinions, some more pronounced than others and I really enjoyed hearing everyone’s thoughts and ideas.

I put forward my pastel picture of Kizzy for critique and was really pleased with the feedback I got.

  • overall, very likeable, especially around the eyes
  • not overworked
  • textured
  • abstract tendencies
  • some discussion regarding Kizzy’s tail, whether it was in keeping with the style of the rest of her body.
  • I’d had intention of making this an abstract piece, i.e to have very blocked-in colours for the white and brown sections of her body, but by the time I reached half way round her back I’d changed my mind and decided to finish the painting in a much more representational way. (Note; I started with her head, worked her neck, round her back into her tail, finally heading back to her nose, very much in the circle she’d created from her lying position. This change of mind really is really reflected in the outcome.

The Hangout is a very useful thing to do & I’ll definitely be joining again in the near future.
