Exercise 2: Abstract painting from man-made form

This exercise encouraged close scrutiny and analysis of a man made form, isolating, focusing  on one particular point, looking at various viewpoints and working my findings into a painting.

There was an old & very rusty lantern in the garden, destined for the tip but forgotten until now. I liked the shapes making up the three main sections as well as the negative shapes, colours & textures. I couldn’t make up my mind which part to focus in on so I began to look at lots of different sections that appealed to me for one reason or another. I then put those shapes together and allowed the painting to reveal itself.

Its a novel idea for me, rather that’s not to start painting before completing lots of prep work, but unusual that I really allow it to run by itself which is exactly what I did here. I didn’t have any preconceived image in my minds eye to work towards and no particular style to use in mind either. Surprising then that this has turned in such a surrealist, cubist style.

I cannot in all honesty say whether this is a success or not. All I can say is there’s something about it that I really like and its still growing on me.
