Exercise 1: Drawing in paint (inc. OCA Hangout feedback)

10/08/2012

This exercise takes a look at the important aspect of drawing in painting, specifically at linear perspective, observational skills, problem solving, spatial relationships, tonal values & movement in still life paintings.

The exercise called for the main shapes to be mapped in using line and the colour added afterwards, retaining the original line throughout the painting process.

I started with a lovely mix of Quinacridone Magenta & Dioxazine Purple from the Winsor & Newton Artists Acrylics paint range, mapping in the line of the composition on textured Galeria A3 Acrylic paper.

Then moved on to blocking in the basic background colour, applied with my trusty plastic friend.

Then continued to work in colour, trying to think of tones, using the chiaroscuro technique, textures & movement…

Until I arrived at this and decided it was finished….

All work was done using a plastic card, no brushes used in this one.

I really like this style, it reminds me of someone/something I’ve seen, especially that purple line, but I can’t quite place it. Nearest similarity I can think of is the style of Toulouse-Lautrec because he used a lot of purple line on a brown ground.

Pleased with this result, will definitely think of using it again in the future, specifically like the texture of both this particular paper and the use of plastic card instead of brushes.

Thoughts generated from an  OCA Hangout session (7 students):

  • Unusual angle & colour, unusual composition
  • repetition gives rhythm, i.e. 2 saucepans, 2 hanging tools, 2 frying pans
  • opinion is that the line is subtle but it seems quite bold to me
  • it has a distressed look
  • intriguing
  • good contrast between soft and hard
  • the red against the brown does work, there is enough contrast to integrate it and the red isnt pushed out on a limb unconnected
  • there is separation, but it does come back round
  • some thoughts this was competent enough to consider using for the final assignment

I came away from the hangout with the overall impression that this style and the painting itself inspired either a ‘love’ or ‘loathe’ reaction but it was a positive feeling.
