Still Life – Rules of Compostion

Further to my post on Still Life I wanted to note down and clarify some of the rules of composition in relation to still life painting.

Initially my research has led me to narrow it down as follows:

  • To create visual harmony – don’t make any two subjects the same, keep shapes, spaces and gaps between things different.
  • To create a sense of balance – Rule of Thirds, Rule of Odds & Golden Mean
  • 3 is the magic number

Key Words: Unity, movement, focus, pattern, balance, rhythm, contrast, proportion.
